Driver Who Fatally Struck Cargo Solidarity Union Members Referred to Prosecution in Custody ... Two Union Members Also Sent for Obstructing Official Duties

The driver who struck members of the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union Cargo Solidarity with his car at a rally site, resulting in three casualties, has been handed over to the prosecution while in custody.


The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency's Metropolitan Investigation Unit announced on April 29 that it has referred Mr. A, a non-union member in his 40s, to the prosecution under arrest on charges of murder and aggravated assault.

According to the police, Mr. A is accused of ramming his car into union members at the Cargo Solidarity rally site in front of the CU Jinju Logistics Center (BGF Logis Jinju Center) in Jeongchon-myeon, Jinju, on April 20, resulting in one death and two injuries.


He was initially arrested on charges of aggravated assault, but after investigation, the police determined that Mr. A acted with implied intent and additionally charged him with murder.


The police also referred Mr. B, a Cargo Solidarity union member in his 60s, and Mr. C, in his 50s, to the prosecution under arrest on charges including obstruction of official duties with special circumstances during the rally.


Mr. B is accused of driving a van into a police barricade and then rushing toward the main gate of the center during the rally in front of the CU Jinju Logistics Center at around 1:33 p.m. on April 20, injuring a police officer.


He also faces charges of injuring two other police officers by resisting arrest during the incident.


Mr. C is accused of attempting self-harm with a weapon or threatening to harm police officers and other unspecified individuals at the same rally site at around 10:00 p.m. on April 19.
