At that time, Miller had agreed to look after her long-time neighbor’s 6-year-old grandson, Royalty Scott, before school because the boy’s guardian had to leave for work. Scott was dropped off at Miller’s home at around 6:45 a.m. on the day of the incident. Around 7:30 a.m., Miller went into the garage to care for her dogs, and Scott followed her by opening the garage door. That’s when the accident happened. Out of the three dogs Miller owned, two-a Great Dane and a Mastiff mix named Carlos and Lola-attacked Scott.
Both large dogs weighed as much as 73 kg and 40 kg, respectively. Scott died at the scene as a result of the attack. According to the investigation, nearly all the bones in Scott’s face were broken, and he suffered between 25 and 50 lacerations. In a police statement, Miller said she managed to pull Lola off Scott but could not subdue Carlos.
She claimed that she tried to choke Carlos and even attempted to shoot him, but could not get a clear shot, and thus was unable to prevent the child from being attacked. According to reports at the time, when police arrived, Miller herself was found injured and covered in blood. Carlos and Lola, the dogs involved in the incident, were euthanized the next day. Miller pleaded not guilty during the trial, but the court found her guilty of the charges and sentenced her to 2 years and 2 months in prison, nearly two years after the incident occurred.
