Spotlighting the Artistic Worlds of Four Masters of Korean Male Dance... Performances Next Month

The National Heritage Center will hold "Masters of Dance: Successors of Male Dance" at the Korea Cultural House (KOUS) on May 19 and 26. The event will spotlight the artistic legacies of Choi Hyun (1929-2002), Jung Jaeman (1948-2014), Lim Ijo (1950-2013), and Kook Sooho (1948-), who established the identity of Korean male dance.

Choi Hyun oversaw the choreography for "Goodbye" at the closing ceremony of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and served as the director of the National Dance Company of Korea. Jung Jaeman was recognized as a holder of the national intangible cultural heritage Seungmu in 2000 and directed the choreography for "Light and Sound" at the Seoul Olympics closing ceremony.

Lim Ijo, acknowledged as an educator for the transmission of Seungmu, served as the director of the Seoul Metropolitan Dance Company. Kook Sooho, who also served as director of the National Dance Company of Korea, oversaw the choreography for the opening ceremony of the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup. He currently acts as chairman of the Kook Sooho Didim Dance Company.

Sixteen disciples of these masters will participate in the performances, presenting representative repertoires of their mentors. In the first performance, Choi Hyun’s disciples Jung Hyejin and Kang Kyungsoo, and Kook Sooho’s disciples Jeon Sunhee and Noh Haejin will perform. Jung Jaeman’s disciples Jung Yongjin and Kim Misook, as well as Lim Ijo’s disciples Kwon Youngsim and Kim Taeho, will also take the stage.

The second performance will feature Jung Hyukjun and Song Hyemin (Choi Hyun), Kim Pyeongho and Lee Jungmin (Kook Sooho), Jeon Eunkyung and Lee Mihui (Jung Jaeman), and Heo Eunyoung and Lim Hyunjong (Lim Ijo).
