Court Issues Arrest Warrant Citing Risk of Flight and Repeat Offenses

An arrest warrant has been issued for a man in his 60s who, just 15 days after being released from prison for driving without a license, was caught behind the wheel again.

According to the Dangjin Police Station in South Chungcheong Province on April 28, the court recently issued an arrest warrant for a 68-year-old man, identified as A, on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (driving without a license), citing concerns over flight risk and the likelihood of repeat offenses.

A is suspected of driving without a license around 4 p.m. on March 1 at the Sapgyo Lake Tourist Complex in Sinpyeong-myeon, Dangjin City. The police received a report of a hit-and-run (failure to take necessary action after an accident), claiming that a vehicle driven by A had struck someone. The police identified A, the owner of the car, as the suspect.

As the injury was minor, the hit-and-run charge was dropped. However, the police booked A on the charge of driving without a license, as he was found to be operating the vehicle without a valid license at the time.

The police investigation revealed that A has 15 prior convictions for violating the Road Traffic Act, including driving without a license and drunk driving. It was confirmed that this offense also occurred just 15 days after he had served an eight-month prison sentence and was released from prison.

It has been reported that A did not attend the warrant review hearing, and the police plan to execute the arrest warrant on April 29. They are also considering seizing the vehicle involved.

Meanwhile, driving without a license constitutes a violation of Article 43 of the Road Traffic Act. Those who operate a vehicle without a license may face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 3 million won. If an accident leads to injury or death, additional charges such as involuntary injury or manslaughter may also be applied.
