Global sports brand Adidas's "Chinese New Year Jacket" will be officially released in the United States. This product, which was first launched in China, features traditional Chinese design elements and gained popularity there, leading to its expansion into global markets.
According to Hong Kong fashion magazine Hypebeast on the 27th (local time), the jacket will be released on the official Adidas online store on May 1 in four colors: olive green, burgundy, light blue, and dark gray. The price has been set at $130 (approximately 190,000 won).
The "Chinese New Year Jacket" is based on a design similar to the Tangzhuang, the traditional clothing from the Qing Dynasty era. It features a modern reinterpretation of traditional elements such as the knotted buttons (pankou) and the standing collar (mandarin collar). This product was reportedly planned by the Adidas Shanghai design team, targeting the Chinese market.
The jacket is adorned with elaborate embroidered patterns symbolizing the celebration of the Lunar New Year. However, the specific materials of each of the four jackets have not yet been disclosed.
Since its launch, the "Chinese New Year Jacket" has gone viral on social media, with related videos garnering millions of views. This is attributed to the spread of the "Chinamaxxing" trend, which means "living like China," particularly among Gen Z worldwide.
According to CNN, in February, the jacket was repeatedly sold out at major stores in Chinese cities, and in the resale market, it fetched prices of up to $400 (approximately 590,000 won).
In Korea as well, the "Chinese New Year Jacket" gained popularity under the nickname "Zhongtidas." "Zhongtidas" combines "Zhongti"-a neologism referring to the flashy or extravagant style characteristic of Chinese products-and Adidas.
