On April 28, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it had received the "Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL)" certification from UL Solutions, a global safety standards certification organization based in the United States.

The certificate award ceremony, held that day at Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje Shipyard, was attended by Namgoong Geumseong, Shipyard Director (Vice President) at Samsung Heavy Industries, and Yoon Hyejin, Executive Director of UL Solutions Korea.

The ZWTL certification is an eco-friendly accreditation that assesses the rate at which waste generated at business sites is recycled rather than landfilled. It serves as a global indicator of a company’s resource circulation efforts.

Samsung Heavy Industries has completely overhauled its waste classification system by categorizing all waste generated at its sites by type and characteristics, according to its internally established waste classification procedures. The company also increased the recovery rate of recyclable resources by connecting manual sorting with mechanical sorting processes.

Additionally, it has enhanced its waste management level by conducting technical cooperation and professional consulting with the Ministry of Environment and Korea Environment Corporation, as well as establishing a real-time monitoring management system.

Namgoong Geumseong, Shipyard Director at Samsung Heavy Industries, stated, “The ZWTL and circular resource certifications are the results of Samsung Heavy Industries’ efforts in waste recycling,” adding, “We will further strengthen our resource circulation system.”
