This agreement was promoted to address the challenges posed by the aging customer base and delayed digital transformation in traditional markets, which make it difficult to attract younger customers. It also aims to boost market competitiveness through youth participation programs and changes in the payment environment.
According to the agreement, Seongnam City will provide experience booths within the Moran Folk Five-Day Market for students from Seongil Information High School to participate in, and will support collaboration with the traditional market merchants' association. In addition, the city will promote the introduction of QR code payment systems in merchant shops and develop promotional strategies tailored to mobile-centric consumer behavior.
The experience booths will offer a variety of programs, including hair cutting, nail art, CPR training, and the creation of memory photos for seniors using artificial intelligence (AI), all utilizing the students’ areas of expertise. The production and online distribution of promotional videos for traditional markets will also be carried out in parallel.
Seongnam City expects that this collaboration will improve the public perception of traditional markets and, by enhancing the payment environment, help attract more young customers and increase merchants’ sales.
At the signing ceremony, Jongchul Lim, Deputy Mayor of Seongnam City, stated, “Seongnam City will provide students with opportunities for hands-on training and talent sharing, while Seongil Information High School will give back to the community with the skills honed through its specialized curriculum. We hope to create a win-win model that brings new vitality to traditional markets.”
Youngjin Byun, Principal of Seongil Information High School, commented, “This will provide students with a meaningful opportunity to apply their skills to real customers,” adding, “We will continue to foster an educational environment that grows together with the local community.”
Meanwhile, Seongnam City plans to use this agreement as an opportunity to continuously expand cooperation programs with specialized local high schools, thereby boosting the local economy and strengthening the link between education and administration.
