Yangju to Establish 'Gyeonggi Future Sports High School' as a Hub for Nurturing Winter Sports Talent in Northern Gyeonggi

A special-purpose high school dedicated to training elite winter sports athletes is set to be established in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province. The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced plans to establish the (tentatively named) Gyeonggi Future Sports High School to strengthen the region’s educational competitiveness and systematically nurture talent in winter sports.

This project will utilize the proposed relocation site for the new Juwon Elementary School, rather than developing an entirely new large-scale site. By doing so, the project aims to minimize both budgetary burdens and administrative procedures, enabling swift progress and serving as a model case for the efficient use of idle educational resources.

The new Gyeonggi Future Sports High School will be the first in the nation to offer a curriculum specialized in winter sports disciplines. In particular, the school plans to establish an online education infrastructure to enhance the efficiency and expertise of its programs, and to implement a convergent curriculum incorporating sports science, thereby simultaneously strengthening both athletic performance and academic capabilities as a future-oriented model of physical education.

Furthermore, if Yangju City’s ongoing initiative to attract an international skating rink is realized, considerable synergy is expected in both revitalizing the local sports industry and expanding related infrastructure.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and Yangju City plan to collaborate by linking budgets and administrative processes, thereby laying the foundation for successful cooperation between the local government and the education office.

A Yangju City official stated, “The establishment of Gyeonggi Future Sports High School will help bridge the educational gap in the northern Gyeonggi region, where educational infrastructure is relatively lacking, and mark an important turning point for Yangju City to become a true city of education. We will actively promote this initiative to ensure systematic talent development that contributes to balanced regional development and strengthens the nation’s competitiveness in sports.”
