The international standardization of “smart hospital systems,” which combine ICT and healthcare, is being led by Korea.
The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it will hold the “13th International Conference on Healthcare Organization Management Standardization (ISO/TC304)” in Seoul from April 28 to 30, 2026. Standardization experts from eight countries, including Korea, Germany, Japan, China, and India, will participate in the conference.
This is the first meeting to be held since Korea assumed the roles of chair and secretariat of ISO/TC304, the international standardization body for healthcare organization management. Korea will not only host the meeting, but also play a key role in shaping and coordinating the direction of global healthcare standardization discussions.
In particular, Korea will propose a total of five drafts for international standards, including those for autonomous robot-based logistics processes and performance evaluation methods in smart hospitals, and will lead discussions centered on these proposals.
Additionally, Korea is pursuing the establishment of a new “Smart Hospital” subcommittee (SC1). Under this subcommittee, four working groups (WGs) will be organized to systematically develop detailed standards in the areas of service robots, smart ESG, hospital Internet of Things (IoT), and inter-hospital communication.
The government aims to use this conference as an opportunity to secure leadership in international standards for smart hospitals and to strengthen the global competitiveness of Korea’s healthcare and ICT industries.
Kim Daeja, Director of the National Institute of Technology and Standards, stated, “Securing leadership in smart hospital standards can simultaneously enhance patient safety and hospital operational efficiency,” adding, “We will continue to support domestic experts so they can actively participate in international standardization activities.”
