In a village in Odisha state, eastern India, a stray dog has died after protecting dozens of elementary school children from a venomous snake, prompting an outpouring of grief from local residents.
On April 28, Yonhap News TV, citing local media NDTV and others, reported on the funeral ceremony held for the stray dog that protected the children from the venomous snake.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on April 20 in the village of Dhirakula, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. At the time, more than 30 young students were gathered near Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir Elementary School. The children were sitting outside the school, chatting, and reportedly did not notice that a venomous snake was approaching them.
At this dangerous moment, a stray dog known in the village as "Kali" rushed toward the snake. Some foreign media outlets reported that the snake was a cobra. Kali placed herself between the children and the snake, confronting it fiercely. She did not back down even after being attacked multiple times by the snake, and ultimately killed the venomous snake. However, Kali was bitten on the mouth during the struggle. As the venom quickly spread, Kali soon collapsed and eventually died. Fortunately, none of the children at the scene were injured.
The residents covered Kali's body with a white cloth and flowers, then placed it on a small cart to make one round around the village, bidding farewell on his final journey. It was reported that a formal funeral ceremony was held afterward, and the body was buried in the ground. News Vanguard
