"Skipping Diamond Rings... Gen Z in the US Opts for Finger Tattoos"

Tattoo Rings Replace Traditional Bands... A New Way to Get Engaged
Travel and Experiences Take Priority Over Diamonds

Among younger generations in the United States, "tattoo rings"-tattoos inked directly onto the finger-are emerging as a new way to get engaged, replacing expensive diamond rings. This trend reflects a growing movement away from traditional marriage symbols, with more focus on individual preferences and personal meaning.

According to the New York Post on April 24 (local time), tattoo rings are gaining attention as a new symbol of commitment among Generation Z and Millennials in the United States. These tattoo rings, inked directly onto the finger, are rapidly spreading as an alternative to traditional diamond rings.

1 in 4 Gen Z Americans "Willing to Choose a Tattoo Ring"

According to a survey by the payment platform company Chime, about a quarter of Gen Z respondents said they would consider a tattoo ring instead of a physical ring. The main reasons cited were that there is no need to worry about sizing, no risk of losing the ring, and no burden of high costs.

This shift involves more than just tattoo rings. The survey found that about 30% were considering gemstones other than expensive diamonds, and 26% were thinking about forgoing rings altogether in favor of spending money on travel or special experiences-investing in "memories" instead.

Social networking services (SNS) have also played a significant role in this trend. On platforms like Instagram and TikTok, content featuring finger tattoos instead of rings is on the rise, and 61% of respondents said that these platforms have changed the culture around marriage proposals.

Proposing Traditions Shift Under Social Media Influence

There are real-life examples as well. Matthew Morris (36) and his wife Shannon (34), living in Ithaca, New York, opted for couple tattoos instead of engagement rings. They had a lightning bolt symbol representing the Pok?mon character Pikachu and the phrase "I choose you" tattooed on their fingers.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars on diamond rings, they spent only about $300 (approximately 440,000 won), and even after four years of engagement, they still have the same tattoos. Morris said, "It is a symbol that reminds us every day that we chose each other."

Experts analyze this trend not simply as a change in taste but as a shift in values. American counseling expert Clay Briggins explained, "Younger generations prioritize choices that hold real meaning for them, rather than simply following tradition." He added, "Marriage is also changing from a predetermined format to a process shaped by each individual."

He further stated, "What matters more than the form of the ring is the process by which the couple made their choice," emphasizing that, "Marriage is being redefined from a social norm to an agreement between individuals."
