Suwon Haenggung-dong 'Car-Free Street' to Operate Regularly Every Saturday Starting in May

In Haenggung-dong, Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, an approximately 220-meter section from 34 Hwaseomun-ro to 47 Sinpung-ro will be operated as a “car-free street” every Saturday starting in May.

The operating hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday. During this period, vehicle traffic will be restricted to create a pedestrian-oriented street where citizens can walk safely and comfortably.

This regular operation was implemented after continuous discussions, including a pilot program conducted in March and April, the “Saebit Toktok” citizen participation platform survey by Suwon City, and meetings with the residents’ association and merchants’ association.

In the survey, over 80% of the 1,980 respondents expressed satisfaction with the operation and answered that continuous operation is necessary.

Additionally, through consultations with the residents’ association and merchants’ association, the operating section was adjusted to 220 meters, and an agreement was reached to operate the car-free street every Saturday, reflecting the opinions of the local community.

Suwon City will deploy on-site management personnel to systematically manage traffic control and pedestrian safety. Signal operators will be stationed at intersections to restrict the passage of external vehicles. Emergency vehicles and residents’ vehicles will be allowed to pass only as necessary.
