This marks the team’s first face-to-face investigation of Yoon, who has been identified as a key figure in various allegations, approximately two months after its launch in February.
However, the special prosecutor’s team stated that it could not confirm whether former President Yoon would be questioned as a suspect or a witness, nor could it specify which particular case would be addressed.
The team is currently investigating allegations that Noh Sang-won, former Commander of the Defense Security Command, organized an unofficial group called the “Investigation Unit 2” during the period of the emergency martial law. These allegations include charges such as forming a criminal organization.
The investigation also covers suspicions surrounding former President Yoon’s alleged involvement in preparations for a “second martial law.” The special prosecutor’s team discovered that, even after the National Assembly passed a resolution calling for the lifting of martial law, the Joint Chiefs of Staff considered additional military deployment, leading to search and seizure operations targeting Joint Chiefs of Staff officials.
The team is also examining suspicions that the presidential office under the Yoon administration intervened in the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office’s investigation into the Ssangbangwool remittance to North Korea case.
In addition, former President Yoon has been directly or indirectly linked to most of the major cases handled by the special prosecutor’s team, including the alleged cover-up of the Deutsche Motors stock price manipulation case involving First Lady Kim Keon-hee, as well as suspicions over the relocation of the presidential residence.
The requested date for former President Yoon’s appearance is April 30. Prior to this, the appellate court’s verdict concerning charges of obstruction of arrest and other allegations against Yoon is scheduled for April 29.
Former President Yoon’s side has stated that a decision on whether he will attend the special prosecutor’s questioning will be made after internal discussions.
