AI Adoption Rate in Manufacturing Sites at 17.9%... KITA Aims to Bridge the Gap Between Awareness and Implementation

The Korea International Trade Association has taken the initiative to support export manufacturing companies in their transition to artificial intelligence (AI).

On April 27, the association, in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Information Industry Association, held the 'Manufacturing AX Seminar' at the Trade Tower in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to facilitate AI transformation at export manufacturing sites.

According to a recent 'Survey on AI Utilization by Export Companies' conducted by the association, while the awareness of the need for AI transformation is spreading across export companies, only 17.9% of companies are actually utilizing AI in their manufacturing sites.

Companies cited the following reasons for not adopting AI: difficulties in identifying areas and processes for AI implementation (41.6%), and lack of basic data infrastructure required for AI adoption (39.1%). This seminar was organized to bridge the gap between awareness and execution, and to enhance the AX execution capabilities of export manufacturing companies.

Approximately 200 executives and employees from domestic export manufacturing companies interested in AI transformation attended the seminar. Participants heard about the government's AX support policies, manufacturing AI adoption technologies, physical AI-based infrastructure, digital twin case studies, and other practical applications and field cases related to manufacturing AX.

In his keynote speech, Professor Juseok Lee of Yonsei University emphasized, "To effectively utilize AI, it is important to establish an environment where companies can operate based on their internal data and systems, rather than relying solely on external clouds." He added, "To efficiently utilize AI even with limited GPU resources, an integrated approach that considers both hardware and software is necessary."

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy presented on the 'M.AX (Manufacturing AI Transformation) Alliance Operation Direction,' introducing a public-private cooperation-based support system to meet the AX demands of companies. The ministry announced its plan to accelerate AI transformation in manufacturing through end-to-end support, from technology development to demonstration and dissemination.

Additionally, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, Samsung SDS, and SK AX presented key technologies, methodologies, and successful cases of AI application in manufacturing sites, providing practical references for companies seeking to adopt AI.

Seokmin Jang, Executive Director of the Korea International Trade Association, stated, "I hope this seminar will serve as a milestone to enhance the AX execution capabilities of companies," and added, "The association will continue to provide various forms of support, including AI education, on-site consulting, and visits to leading companies, to help companies further develop their AX competencies."
