LG Chem Wins 'Technology Award' at Chinaplas for Materials for Electric Vehicles and Robotics

The Only Korean Company to Win an Award at the Event
Expanding a Portfolio Centered on High-Value Materials

LG Chem has demonstrated its technological competitiveness with high-value specialty materials at a global exhibition.

On the 27th, LG Chem announced that it received the "Top 10 Technology Excellence Award" for its specialty polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material, HRTP (Heat-Resistant Recycled Thermoplastic Resin), at "Chinaplas 2026," a global plastics and rubber exhibition recently held in Shanghai, China. LG Chem was the only Korean company to win an award at this event.

This award is regarded as evidence that LG Chem's strategy to shift its business structure from commodity products to high-value, high-functionality materials is yielding tangible technological achievements on the global stage. HRTP was named "Innovation of the Year" at Chinaplas 2025 last year, earning recognition for its technological competitiveness for the second consecutive year.

The judging panel cited the outstanding performance of the ultra-high molecular weight HRTP material in terms of flexibility, flame retardancy, and abrasion resistance, as well as its strong application potential for products like electric vehicle charging cables, as the main reasons for its selection.

HRTP is a specialty material based on PVC, traditionally regarded as a commodity resin, but it simultaneously meets the requirements for heat resistance, flexibility, and durability demanded by next-generation industries such as electric vehicles and robotics. It can be applied to electric vehicle charging cables and high-heat-resistant wires for automobiles and robots, delivering approximately 30% improved flexibility compared to conventional materials, while also maintaining stable performance in high-voltage and high-temperature environments.

Additionally, with its soft texture and abrasion resistance, HRTP is increasingly being used as an alternative to expensive materials in markets such as automotive synthetic leather and seats. HRTP delivers high performance and is recyclable, even without a cross-linking process that chemically bonds its structure, making it a high-value material that meets the requirements of high functionality, safety, and sustainability.

At this exhibition, LG Chem also received an Excellence Award for "UNICABLE," its eco-friendly packaging material. The company is expanding its portfolio of materials that simultaneously offer high functionality and sustainability across various industrial sectors, including consumer goods packaging. The judging panel highlighted the significant reduction in plastic usage achieved by UNICABLE, as well as its leading results in environmental protection and commercialization, as key factors in its selection.

LG Chem plans to continue shifting the focus of its petrochemical business from commodity products to high-value materials, and to further strengthen its customer value-based competitiveness in materials, particularly in growth industries such as electric vehicles, robotics, mobility, electric and electronic components, and industrial goods.
