On April 27, Song Youngki, a preliminary candidate for Gyeongnam Superintendent of Education, held a press conference at the Geochang County Office briefing room and announced five major education policy pledges centered on the Geochang region.
The press conference was held under the theme, "Deeply Rooted Education, a Strong Future! The Pride of Geochang Education! We Will Grow It into a Forest of Gyeongnam Education," and presented region-specific education policies to address the challenges of rapid population decline and the threat of school closures.
Candidate Song explained his five core pledges by stating, "I will protect the identity of Geochang's education, create a region where people do not leave, and establish an educational environment that is ideal for raising children."
First, through the creation of the "Geochang-style Edu-Town," he pledged to regularize collaboration between the local government and the Regional Education Development Council, and to establish a system for integrated discussions on housing, education, transportation, and childcare. Based on this, he plans to create a study-abroad-type Edu-Town for agricultural, mountain, and fishing villages to enhance the competitiveness of local education.
He also emphasized the introduction of a "Small School Support and Integrated Responsibility System" to support distinctive curricula and provide comprehensive support for commuting, childcare, and after-school programs, thereby reducing the burden on students and parents.
Plans to improve the teacher personnel system were also presented. Candidate Song stated that he would conduct a thorough survey of the career structure by region and school level, redesign criteria for tenure and transfer, and strengthen incentives for teachers serving long-term in agricultural, mountain, and fishing areas.
Additionally, to expand "Eco-friendly Healthy School Meals," he proposed unifying the food integrated support center and public distribution network at the provincial level and increasing the supply of local agricultural products to school meals, with the aim of improving both student health and the local agricultural industry.
Furthermore, through the operation of the "CAN Bus (Connect·Active·Network)," he pledged to support joint educational programs linking schools and communities and to activate community programs focused on play and physical education.
Candidate Song stated, "Education is the most powerful foundation for revitalizing the region," adding, "Starting with Geochang, I will establish a sustainable educational ecosystem throughout Gyeongnam."
Meanwhile, the press conference was attended by local education officials and members of the media, who showed great interest in the policy direction presented.
