Sacheon City, Gyeongsangnam-do, will operate under the acting mayor system starting April 28.
The city announced that Mayor Park Dongsik has transitioned authority to an acting mayor system as of the afternoon of April 27, following his registration as a preliminary candidate for the 9th Nationwide Local Elections to run for Sacheon Mayor.
This measure is in accordance with the Local Autonomy Act, which restricts the official duties of local government heads when they declare candidacy for elections.
As a result, Deputy Mayor Kim Jehong will take over as acting mayor from April 28 until June 3, the day of the 9th Nationwide Local Elections, and will oversee all city affairs during this period.
Acting Mayor Kim Jehong stated, "I will ensure there are no administrative gaps and will fully focus on key city issues and the stability of citizens' daily lives," adding, "I will establish strict discipline among public officials and do my utmost to maintain stable city governance, ensuring that all projects proceed smoothly."
In relation to the transition to the acting mayor system, Sacheon City emphasized that administrative continuity and stability are the top priorities, and that its administrative capacity will be focused on minimizing inconvenience to citizens.
Additionally, the city plans to strictly uphold the political neutrality required of public officials and to ensure thorough preparations for the upcoming 9th Nationwide Local Elections without any setbacks.
Meanwhile, former Mayor Park Dongsik is expected to register as a preliminary candidate for the 9th Nationwide Local Elections on the morning of April 28 and to officially begin his election campaign.
