Banwoljungang-dong in Masanhappo-gu Transforms Village Culture Through Carbon Neutrality

On April 27, Banwoljungang-dong in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon Special City, Gyeongsangnam-do held an event at the basement parking lot of the Administrative Welfare Center to make eco-friendly soap using waste cooking oil.

The event was attended by 15 people, including members of the Banwoljungang-dong Carbon Neutral Village Promotion Committee and Banwoljungang-dong chief Park Myunghee, who participated in the soap-making activity.

The eco-friendly soap produced through this initiative will be sold to residents, encouraging them to voluntarily participate in practical, everyday activities for creating a carbon-neutral community.

The Banwoljungang-dong Carbon Neutral Village Promotion Committee, which organized the event, has been regularly collecting waste cooking oil from local businesses since 2010 to recycle it into eco-friendly soap. The proceeds from sales are used to support neighbors in need and vulnerable households, as part of ongoing community volunteer efforts.

Chairman Lee Jongmin stated, "I would like to express my gratitude to the committee members who attended the event, and I will continue to do my best to discover meaningful projects to further establish our village as a leading example of carbon neutrality."

Soap made from waste cooking oil is easily biodegradable and causes less water pollution compared to industrial detergents, helping to prevent water contamination.

Households can contribute to reducing carbon emissions and protecting nature by wiping up small amounts of used cooking oil with newspaper and disposing of it in designated waste bags, or by placing it in waste oil collection bins for recycling.
