HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a contract signing ceremony for the construction of an overseas icebreaking specialized vessel, marking the first time a Korean shipyard has won such an order.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 27th that it had held a contract signing ceremony with the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) for the construction of an icebreaking specialized vessel on the 24th (local time) at the National Maritime Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.


The event was attended by Juwonho Joo, President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (Head of Naval Shipbuilding and Medium-sized Ship Business), Erik Eklund, Director General of the Swedish Maritime Administration, and other officials, who discussed the significance of the contract and future collaboration plans.


On the 22nd, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries disclosed that it had won an order from the Swedish Maritime Administration for one icebreaking specialized vessel worth 348.9 million USD (514.8 billion won). Scheduled for delivery in 2029, the vessel will feature 'PC (Polar Class) 4' level icebreaking capability, enabling it to break through ice approximately 1 to 1.2 meters thick continuously.
