Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education to Establish "Future-Oriented Sports Special-Purpose and Vocational High Schools" in Yangju and Uijeongbu

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent: Lim Taehee) is moving forward with plans to establish two new specialized high schools in the northern Gyeonggi region: a special-purpose school tentatively named "Gyeonggi Future Sports High School" in Yangju, and a vocational high school tentatively named "Sports Convergence Science High School" in Uijeongbu, both aimed at nurturing future sports talent.

This initiative aims to build a comprehensive sports education system in northern Gyeonggi. In Yangju, the plan is to provide specialized education focused on winter sports, while Uijeongbu will serve as a hub for converged education across sports, science, and industry. Each school will develop a systematic sports talent development model tailored to local conditions.

The provincial education office is working with Yangju City to coordinate budgets and administration and make use of an optimal site previously selected for a new school, as part of plans to establish the tentatively named "Gyeonggi Future Sports High School." Through this, the school will operate the nation’s first curriculum specialized in winter sports, and will also set up an online education platform to enhance both efficiency and expertise.

Additionally, in Uijeongbu, the office is pursuing the establishment of the tentatively named "Sports Convergence Science High School," a specialized high school integrating sports, science, and industry. The school will cultivate practical experts across all areas of sports, including sports data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI) applications, sports marketing, and rehabilitation.

In particular, the schools will offer customized programs for students transitioning from athletic careers to other paths, aiming to become "schools that design life after sports." To support this, the schools will build an industry-academia cooperation system with local sports facilities and sports industry enterprises.

The provincial education office expects that establishing these sports-focused schools will expand the sports infrastructure in northern Gyeonggi and broaden career options for both student-athletes and general students.

Lim Taehee, Superintendent of Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, stated, "Gyeonggi Future Sports High School in Yangju will become a model for nurturing future sports talent by leveraging local assets, while Sports Convergence Science High School in Uijeongbu will emerge as a hub for cultivating convergent talent to lead the future sports industry."

He added, "Focusing on both specialization and convergence, we will open a new path for sports education in northern Gyeonggi and expand the foundation for nurturing future sports talent."

The provincial education office plans to sequentially carry out feasibility reviews, curriculum design, and administrative procedures for the school establishments in cooperation with relevant agencies.
