A professional traffic safety instructor affiliated with the Seongnam City Children's Traffic Education Center will visit senior centers to deliver hands-on, case-based training. The sessions last approximately 50 minutes and are structured to ensure that elderly participants can join without feeling burdened.
According to traffic accident statistics from the Korean National Police Agency, in 2025, there were 45,873 traffic accidents involving elderly drivers, an increase of 8.3% compared to the previous year. The number of fatalities rose by 10.8% to 843. Among the 926 pedestrian traffic accident fatalities, 619 were elderly pedestrians, accounting for about 66.8%. This analysis shows that a significant proportion of pedestrian fatalities are concentrated among the elderly.
Given that elderly pedestrians account for more than two-thirds of all pedestrian fatalities, the need for traffic safety education targeting this group is becoming increasingly urgent.
The upcoming on-site traffic safety education will focus on practical, immediately applicable content, including: guidelines for safe walking, daily safety rules illustrated with real accident cases, and traffic safety habits that can be practiced with family members.
The training sessions will be held every Friday at 2 p.m., with the schedule coordinated in advance with each senior center.
A Seongnam City official stated, "As traffic accidents involving the elderly continue to rise, we expect on-site education tailored to seniors' perspectives to help prevent accidents. We will continue to expand traffic safety policies that citizens can truly feel in their daily lives."
