Regarding the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner venue, Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on April 26 (local time) that the suspect may have targeted U.S. President Donald Trump.
In an interview with NBC News that day, Acting Attorney General Blanche said the shooter "actually targeted people working in the administration, possibly including the President."
The previous night, a shooting occurred at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner held at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. The suspect, Cole Thomas Allen (31), a California resident, fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent at the security checkpoint of the venue and attempted to break through security before being subdued on site.
Acting Attorney General Blanche revealed that during the investigation, it was confirmed that the suspect traveled by train from California through Chicago to Washington, D.C., and checked into the hotel one or two days before the event was held.
Investigative authorities currently believe that the suspect acted alone. However, Acting Attorney General Blanche noted that this assessment could change as investigators gather more information. He also added that the suspect is expected to be indicted in federal court on April 27 on charges including assault on a federal official, discharging a firearm, and attempted murder of a federal official.
