The Gyeonggi Provincial Government will supply 1,100 units of a new type of integrated public rental housing in the Hanam Gyosan public housing district, a third-generation new city, offering more than just residential space by combining jobs and welfare services.
On April 23, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government approved the project plan for the "Hanam Gyosan A-3 Block Public Housing Project" by Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Development Corporation (GH), which includes these details.
This project involves constructing 1,100 units of integrated public rental housing on a 35,722-square-meter site in the Cheonhyeon-dong area of Hanam. It will consist of seven apartment buildings (ranging from two basement levels to 29 above-ground floors) and auxiliary welfare facilities. The units will be offered in various types, with exclusive areas ranging from 31 to 59 square meters.
Until now, public rental housing has focused solely on providing a "place to sleep," often resulting in residents being isolated from the local community, and in the case of the elderly, being excluded from economic activities and welfare benefits.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government identified the cause of this issue as the physical separation of housing and services. In response, the Hanam Gyosan A-3 Block will introduce a "community welfare center" where residential and welfare services are provided in one place. This facility will serve as a welfare hub not only for residents of the complex but also for nearby local residents, functioning as a key infrastructure to invigorate the local community.
This project has been selected as a site for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "2025 Second Half Elderly-Friendly Public Housing Specialization Project." Accordingly, 100 out of the total 1,100 units will be supplied as elderly-friendly housing, featuring barrier-free designs such as the removal of thresholds and installation of safety handrails to accommodate seniors with mobility difficulties.
Specialized spaces to support residents’ economic independence and social participation will also be greatly expanded. Within the complex, there will be job counseling offices and shared workspaces, as well as cultural and leisure complex spaces such as a bubble laundry and cafe lounge, which will provide both workplaces and rest areas for seniors and vulnerable groups.
Kim Tae-su, Director of Housing Policy at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, stated, "The Hanam Gyosan A-3 Block is one of the key projects for ensuring housing stability for residents of the province. We will do our utmost to go beyond simply providing residential space, to make a real contribution to housing stability, and to offer high-quality public rental housing that residents can truly appreciate."
