"Large Object Falls from the Sky in a Flash"...Eyewitness Accounts Stir Up the Night

On the evening of the 24th, numerous eyewitness accounts described seeing a large, oval-shaped object burning as it fell from the sky.

According to Yonhap News Agency on the 25th, a resident of Incheon, referred to as A, witnessed a large, meteor-like object falling while driving near the Sipjeong-dong area of Bupyeong-gu at around 8:43 p.m. on the 24th. Upon reviewing the footage recorded on A’s car dashboard camera, it was confirmed that the object developed a long fiery tail as it fell and appeared to split once or twice while descending.

This sighting was also reported in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province. Witness B testified, “An unidentified object fell from the sky near Cheonbo Tunnel in Hoeam-dong, Yangju.”

On social networking services (SNS), posts appeared from people saying they saw a glowing object falling beyond apartment complexes. Netizens who witnessed the object commented, “Something fell from the sky-was it a meteor?” and “It’s a pity I couldn’t capture it in a photo,” among other reactions.

The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute is also assuming this object was a meteor. It is known that if a meteor is large, it appears as a “fireball,” burning brightly. An official from the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute explained, “The celestial object in the dashboard camera footage looks like a typical fireball. The fiery tail extends as it burns out, but at this time, it is not possible to estimate the impact location.”
