Macron Says "No Politics After Stepping Down"... Unclear If This Means Retirement

Possibility of Running in the 2032 Presidential Election

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that he will no longer be involved in politics once he steps down from the presidency next year.

According to AFP, during a visit to Cyprus on the 23rd (local time), President Macron made these remarks while speaking with students at the French-Cypriot School. President Macron said, "I was not engaged in politics before I became president, and I will not be in the future either."

Bloomberg reported that, on the same day, when asked by reporters at the European Union (EU) summit in Cyprus whether his remarks indicated retirement from politics after stepping down next year, President Macron declined to answer.

President Macron has consistently given ambiguous answers or avoided giving a direct response regarding the possibility of running for a third term. According to the French constitution, the presidential term is five years and one cannot serve more than two consecutive terms. Since President Macron has already been re-elected, he cannot run in the 2027 presidential election. However, there are no other restrictions, so it is legally possible for him to run in the 2032 election and beyond.
