President Lee Jaemyung will meet with Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, at the Blue House on April 27.
According to the Blue House on April 24, President Lee plans to discuss with CEO Hassabis the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the resulting transformations across the field of science and technology. They will also explore cooperation on key issues such as AI-driven scientific and technological innovation and the responsible use of AI.
The Blue House explained that President Lee has continuously pursued partnerships with global companies such as OpenAI, NVIDIA, and SoftBank to elevate Korea to one of the world’s top three AI powerhouses. The Blue House also added that, more recently, efforts have been underway to establish the 'Global AI Hub' in Korea through consultations with international organizations.
The Blue House further stated, "This meeting is an extension of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen global AI cooperation," adding, "Collaborating with a world-leading AI company will further accelerate policies for AI-driven scientific and technological innovation, as well as the responsible utilization of AI."
CEO Hassabis, who founded Google DeepMind, is known for overseeing the historic 2016 Go match between Lee Sedol and the AI program AlphaGo. He is also a world-renowned scholar who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024 for developing the protein structure prediction AI model AlphaFold.
