Osan City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Gwonjae), announced on April 24 that it has proposed to Assemblyman Cha Jiho, who represents the Osan district, the formation of a cooperative body as part of its vision to transform Osan into a “Korean-style Silicon Valley” that harmonizes work and life by attracting an Artificial Intelligence Hub (AI HUB) to Saegyo 3 New Town.
The city directly visited the office of Assemblyman Cha Jiho, who has shown keen interest in the government-led initiative to bring a Global AI Hub to Korea, and requested collaboration for local development.
According to the city, the Global AI Hub is envisioned as a global base that connects AI technology, policy, and industry, serving as a kind of control tower that will determine leadership in future industries.
Currently, the city is working to attract AI advanced industry research centers (R&D) to several projects, including the Saegyo 3 New Town district development, Unamddeul AI City urban development, and the Saegyo 1 terminal site mixed-use development project.
In an official letter, the city explained, “By attracting an AI Hub, global semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment companies, as well as advanced materials companies to the Saegyo 3 New Town economic self-sufficiency site, and creating shared office spaces where venture companies such as game developers can operate, we aim to enhance not only the city’s brand value but also its self-sufficiency and fiscal independence.”
The city added, “We also plan to establish a testbed for the e-sports industry as part of the mixed-use development at the Saegyo 1 terminal site in northern Osan, and to build an e-sports arena in Unamddeul AI City in eastern Osan.”
The city further stated, “We seek the cooperation of Assemblyman Cha to ensure the successful progress of these initiatives so that Osan City can become a true central city of southern Gyeonggi Province, and we ask for participation in a mutually beneficial business agreement.”
