Yangyang County in Gangwon Province plans to complete the Mulchi Port Seafood Comprehensive Sales Center within this year, aiming to revitalize seafood sales and boost the local economy through facility modernization.
The county announced that it is pushing forward with the project, targeting completion of the Mulchi Port Seafood Comprehensive Sales Center by December. The project has gained momentum with an additional 3.5 billion won in county funds secured through the first supplementary budget for this year.
The total project cost is 10 billion won, with 3.55 billion won from the provincial government, 4.45 billion won from the county, and 2 billion won in private contributions.
The existing Mulchi Fishery Cooperative Sashimi Center, built in 1999, became outdated, and a precision safety inspection conducted in 2021 rated it Grade D, leading to the decision to construct a new building.
The new Mulchi Port Seafood Comprehensive Sales Center will be a single three-story building with a building area of 1,163.92 square meters and a total floor area of 2,806.62 square meters. The first floor will house restaurants, a lounge for fishermen, and a machine room. The second floor will feature a sashimi center with 17 retail units. The third floor will include a restaurant and a common hall, and a caf? will be created in the rooftop space.
In particular, the walls have been finished with glass so that visitors can enjoy the scenery of Mulchi Port while dining.
The county completed the detailed design in April last year and began construction in June of the same year, with the goal of completing the work by December this year. After completion, the Mulchi Fishery Cooperative (led by Lee Kyunghyun), a self-regulated fisheries management community, will take over as the management and operating entity.
Kim Hakshin, Director of the Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at Yangyang County, stated, "We regret the inconvenience caused to visitors and residents due to the outdated facilities of the Mulchi Sashimi Center over the years. We will ensure the successful completion of the Mulchi Port Seafood Comprehensive Sales Center so that it can genuinely contribute to revitalizing tourism at Mulchi Port and supporting the local economy."
Meanwhile, Mulchi Port is a local fishing port located at the northern tip of Yangyang County, boasting excellent accessibility as it is adjacent to the Donghae Expressway Bukyangyang IC and Sokcho City. The two lighthouses, shaped like Yangyang’s signature specialty pine mushrooms, create a unique landscape, and the sunrise between the lighthouses is especially beautiful, making it a well-known sunrise viewing spot.
