KBSI Transfers "Thermal Imaging Microscopy" Technology... "Supporting Commercialization"

The "high-resolution thermal imaging microscopy technology (thermal imaging microscopy technology)" developed by a Korean research team has now entered the commercialization stage. Thermal imaging microscopy offers the capability to precisely analyze heat generation phenomena in semiconductors, and is expected to help address the industry's challenges of heat generation and yield degradation.

The Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) announced on April 24 that it has signed a technology transfer agreement with HB Solution Co., Ltd. regarding the thermal imaging microscopy technology.

The transferred thermal imaging microscopy technology is equipment developed by the research team led by Dr. Kisu Jang at KBSI. Its core feature is the ability to non-contact measure and visualize subtle heat generation in electronic devices.

The issues of heat generation and yield degradation in highly integrated, high-performance devices are key challenges that determine the competitiveness of the semiconductor industry.

However, existing defect analysis equipment based on infrared microscopes has been limited by spatial resolution, making precise analysis of micro-defects and faults difficult.

In contrast, the thermal imaging microscopy technology developed by the research team enables the precise localization of defects with high accuracy, allowing next-generation highly integrated semiconductor defect analysis to be performed with outstanding precision. Notably, the technology’s practical applicability has already been validated and proven through collaborative research with major Korean conglomerates. With this technology transfer, full-scale commercialization has now become possible.

HB Solution, the company receiving the thermal imaging microscopy technology, is a leading small and medium-sized enterprise in Korea with over 26 years of experience in the MI, inkjet, and coating technology sectors. KBSI assessed that, given its recognized technological prowess especially in the display and semiconductor fields, HB Solution is well-suited for commercializing the thermal imaging microscopy technology.

A representative from HB Solution stated, "By commercializing the thermal imaging microscopy technology transferred from KBSI, we will ensure it is widely utilized across various industrial sectors, including semiconductors."

Seonggwang Yang, Director of KBSI, commented, "Heat management and yield improvement are core challenges for the semiconductor industry, and the thermal imaging microscopy technology transferred by KBSI boasts the world’s highest level of performance in precise heat analysis. We hope that this technology transfer to HB Solution will help enhance the competitiveness of Korea's semiconductor industry."
