The government recently conducted on-site inspections of food packaging companies to preemptively block speculative demand stemming from concerns over rising petrochemical raw material prices due to the recent Middle East crisis.
On April 24, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that Kim Jungwook, Policy Chief of the Agricultural Industry Innovation Policy Bureau, led a joint visit with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to the Asan plant of Dongwon Systems, a packaging material manufacturer, to check the supply situation of food and restaurant packaging materials.
An official from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food stated, "This inspection was organized as a proactive measure in response to growing uncertainty in naphtha supply caused by recent instability in the Middle East," adding, "Due to concerns that the supply of petrochemical raw materials may be disrupted as a result of the Middle East crisis, there is increasing risk of supply instability in the food packaging industry, which is highly dependent on petrochemical materials."
There are also concerns about the possibility of market distortion if speculative demand arises due to fears of rising raw material prices. In response, during the inspection, the government closely examined not only the inventory status of packaging raw materials and finished products, but also overall production and supply trends, as well as future outlooks for raw material supply.
At the site, in-depth discussions were held with representatives from packaging manufacturers about the challenges faced by the industry. The industry representatives mainly pointed out: ▲ difficulties in procuring basic raw materials such as film sheets ▲ production constraints due to multilayer packaging structures ▲ uncertainties caused by reliance on imported raw materials.
Kim stated, "Packaging materials are a key element supporting the overall supply chain of the food industry," adding, "The government will make every effort to proactively block market-disrupting factors such as speculative demand and maintain a stable supply system for packaging materials."
