Opening University Fence to Create a 'Community Rest Area'... Seodaemun-gu Develops Urban Garden

Seodaemun-gu in Seoul (Mayor Lee Seongheon) announced on April 24 that it has transformed an old community rest area within the Methodist Theological University (56, Dongnimmun-ro) into a new urban garden.

This rest area was established in 2010 as part of the 'Campus Fence Opening Greening Project' next to the main gate parking lot on campus. It covers an area of 1,000 square meters. Over the years, the facilities became outdated and damaged, which not only spoiled the landscape but also raised concerns about safety, making renovation urgent.

The district invested 150 million won in the project and began construction in early March. Over approximately two months, the project went beyond simply replacing outdated facilities and achieved a comprehensive environmental improvement.

To enhance the landscape, 62 trees such as cherry trees, 1,873 shrubs including spindle trees, 247 hydrangeas, and 7 western crabapple trees were planted. The old pergola was replaced with a stylish new design, and three new pieces of outdoor exercise equipment were installed. The damaged pavement was re-laid, and the height of the boundary stones was lowered. The pedestrian environment was improved so that everyone can move safely through the area.

Lee Seongheon, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, "Through this renovation, the university's open space has been transformed into a pleasant place for citizens to relax," and added, "We will continue to focus on creating such shared spaces by utilizing idle areas on campus, taking advantage of the district's unique characteristic of having many universities."
