Jeonju City Strengthens Practical Training for Hydrogen Bus Maintenance Personnel

Focus on High-Voltage Safety and Fuel Cell Maintenance

Jeonju City, North Jeolla Province, is working to strengthen the expertise of maintenance personnel in line with the growing adoption of eco-friendly hydrogen buses.

According to Jeonju City on April 23, the city conducted the "Eco-Friendly Bus Maintenance Workforce Job (Safety) Competency Enhancement Training" on April 21 at the Blue Hands Jeonbuk Hyundai Commercial Service Training Center for around 20 maintenance staff from local transportation companies.

This training was organized to reduce the technological gap at maintenance sites amid the rapid increase in hydrogen bus adoption, and to prevent possible accidents during the handling of high-voltage devices.

The training is a follow-up initiative to the "Hydrogen City Bus Safety Enhancement" business agreement signed in April last year. The program aims to boost the practical skills of on-site maintenance personnel as the industry shifts its focus from internal combustion engines to eco-friendly vehicles.

An expert instructor from Hyundai Motor Company, the hydrogen bus manufacturer, led both theory and practical sessions during the training. The curriculum focused on essential skills such as hydrogen fuel cell stack maintenance, high-voltage system shutdown procedures, and emergency response guidelines. In particular, the hands-on training reflected the unique characteristics of hydrogen buses, which differ structurally from conventional internal combustion engine buses, providing real-world benefits to maintenance technicians by improving their understanding and response capabilities.

The city plans to use this training as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation among manufacturers, local governments, and transportation companies. The goal is to continuously improve the technical skills of maintenance personnel and enhance the safety of hydrogen bus operations. In addition, a joint on-site inspection with related agencies is scheduled for July and August, and further competency enhancement training, including both maintenance and driving staff, is planned for September.

Kim Yong-sam, Director of Public Transportation at Jeonju City, stated, "As important as the outward growth of eco-friendly bus adoption is the establishment of a robust safety management system that allows citizens to use public transportation with peace of mind. We will focus our administrative efforts on creating a safe transportation environment that citizens can truly experience."
