SP Samhwa Accelerates Battery Materials Business... Unveils Lineup of "Thermal Control Materials"

Development of High-Performance Thermal Management Materials, Including Thermal Adhesive Products

On April 23, SP Samhwa announced that it will accelerate its battery materials business, focusing on "thermal control materials," as part of its strategy to become a global integrated chemical company.

With the rapid increase in the adoption of electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS), preventing battery efficiency degradation and thermal runaway fires has emerged as a key challenge. Drawing on 80 years of accumulated expertise in precision chemical technology, SP Samhwa has developed high-performance thermal management materials that ensure both battery performance and safety.

SP Samhwa is expanding its business domain, which has traditionally centered on paints, into the new materials sector. The newly released thermal control materials are offered in three product lines.

The three types of thermal control materials include: a high-performance "thermal adhesive material" that fills gaps completely to release heat efficiently to the outside; an intumescent "flame-retardant coating" that expands upon exposure to runaway heat, thereby blocking heat transfer and delaying the onset of flames; and an "insulating potting material" that blocks heat transfer and releases gas when internal pressure exceeds a certain threshold, preventing explosions. SP Samhwa also offers a variety of solutions to prevent battery fire propagation, including non-combustible potting materials and insulating silicone foam.

The "thermal adhesive material" dissipates heat generated inside the battery to the outside and features excellent insulation, thermal conductivity, and adhesion properties. It is used in areas where adhesive and thermal dissipation performance are required, such as battery packs and electrical control components.

The "flame-retardant coating" forms a thick protective barrier (a porous carbonized layer) as the film is heated during thermal runaway. This delays the spread of flames and secures critical time for evacuation and fire suppression.

SP Samhwa is strengthening its expertise in the new materials business through collaboration with its subsidiaries Inno FNI and Samhwa Daelim Chemical.

A key achievement is the "functional double-sided tape" jointly developed with Inno FNI, a company specializing in new materials. Major products include: tape for fixing battery cell pouches, flame-retardant functional tape, tape for adhering to uneven surfaces, and industrial high-strength adhesive tape.

The "flame-retardant functional tape" has achieved UL94 VTM-0 flame retardancy certification and can be used in fields requiring fire safety, such as batteries, electrical and electronic components, and building interior materials. It is available in a range of structures, from thin 50㎛ to 180㎛ thicknesses.

An SP Samhwa official stated, "Thermal control materials are essential chemical solutions for designing a safe future in the electric vehicle and battery industries," adding, "We will continue to establish ourselves as a key partner throughout the battery lifecycle and as a global materials company through ongoing research and development."
