Recently, international media outlets including Free Press Journal reported that a video showing a man standing inside the New York subway with several cockroaches encased in a transparent plastic jacket has been spreading rapidly across social media and online communities, stirring up controversy. In the video, some passengers can be seen reacting with shock, while others pass by without intervening. Online users commented, "It's like a nightmare," "I can't believe those are real cockroaches," and "It's shocking that someone actually wore that on the subway." Some also noted the nonchalant reaction of certain citizens, saying, "This scene perfectly captures the unique indifference of New Yorkers."

At first, some online users speculated that the jacket might be a product from a luxury brand. However, according to international news reports and online sources, the jacket was identified as the "Roachcoat" created by Uncommon NY, a New York-based streetwear brand. This item is not a commercial product for general sale, but rather a promotional piece produced for brand marketing purposes. The media explained that the brand created an unsettling visual message by placing live insects in sealed pockets. The concept for the Roachcoat reportedly originated from an NBA season comment by a Boston Celtics reporter, who described the New York Knicks as "like cockroaches." The brand stated in its product description that it embraced this comparison as a symbol, linking the cockroach's tenacious survival ability to the team's image.

The cockroaches used inside the jacket are believed to be Madagascar hissing cockroaches. This species is known to be relatively docile and poses little risk to humans, making it suitable for educational or filming purposes. However, this video has attracted attention not only for the disgust it provoked but also as an example of brand marketing utilizing provocative visuals. Additionally, the use of live insects for such a display is likely to continue generating discomfort and raise ethical concerns.
