At the time, the three brothers were riding together on one motorcycle, while two others on another motorcycle behind them were filming their ride with a mobile phone. They were weaving through trucks and attempting to overtake each other on the highway, engaging in what is known locally as "Kalchigi" driving. In particular, they repeatedly performed dangerous overtaking maneuvers between trucks to film short-form videos for SNS. During one such maneuver, the motorcycle carrying the brothers crashed directly into the back of a truck loaded with bricks. All three brothers died at the scene. The two people on the following motorcycle, who were filming, were also seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
The footage left behind by the group shows the motorcycle with the three brothers making sudden lane changes and engaging in "Kalchigi" driving. The accident video quickly spread online. According to local media, reckless driving for the purpose of filming short videos for SNS resulted in this major tragedy.
Meanwhile, "Kalchigi" refers to the dangerous driving practice of frequently changing lanes and overtaking other vehicles without maintaining a safe distance. In Korea as well, traffic accidents resulting from Kalchigi and reckless driving continue to occur, and violations of related laws can result in penalty points, fines, and even criminal charges.
