Axios reported on April 22 (local time) that U.S. President Donald Trump may extend the ceasefire with Iran by about three to five days.

Quoting U.S. sources, Axios stated, "President Trump is willing to allow an additional three to five days of ceasefire to give Iran time to manage the situation," adding, "However, it will not be an indefinite ceasefire."

President Trump had abruptly announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran the previous day, just one day before the scheduled expiration of the two-week ceasefire. However, he did not specify the new deadline for the extension.

The reason behind the ceasefire extension is the perceived division within Iran between the negotiating team and the military. A U.S. government official explained, "Neither side is able to contact Iran's supreme leader, and the supreme leader has not shown any response," as the background for extending the ceasefire.

It is reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which controls the Iranian military, and the faction led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and head of the negotiating delegation, are in conflict over the strategy for negotiations with the United States.

When Speaker Ghalibaf declared the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), some Iranian media outlets representing the military sharply criticized the move.

Currently, President Trump is reportedly seeking to bring the war to a close. The United States has exhausted all possible military actions in the Iran war, and public opinion regarding the war is unfavorable.

Axios, citing a close aide to the President, reported, "President Trump appears unwilling to use military force any longer and seems to have decided to end the war." However, it was added that if Iran does not participate in the peace negotiations, military options may be reconsidered.
