Previously, during its 10th meeting on April 15, the People Power Party’s North Gyeongsang Provincial Chapter designated the Eoseong County Governor election as a primary region and narrowed down the candidates to four: Lee Younghun, Lee Chungwon, Jang Geunho, and Choi Yucheol.
Choi’s confirmation as the party’s nominee is significant not only as an internal victory but also because he has secured the initiative in the general election. By emerging as the final winner in a multi-candidate race, he has become the focal point for party unity and the reorganization of the support base.
Notably, due to the three-term consecutive limit for incumbent county governors, this year’s Eoseong County Governor election has been regarded early on as one of the most fiercely contested battlegrounds in the local political scene.
Local political circles are evaluating this nomination result as a signal that the competition over Eoseong’s future issues is now entering the main phase of the election.
Key factors in the general election are expected to include which candidate presents the most convincing proposals for Eoseong’s mid-to-long-term challenges, such as strategies for development linked to the new integrated airport, countermeasures against regional depopulation, strengthening agricultural competitiveness, and improving residential conditions.
Even during the primary process, policy competition among the candidates centered around issues such as the new airport and solutions to population decline emerged as major points of contention.
With his victory in the primary, Choi Yucheol has concluded the intra-party competition. Going forward, his task will be to deliver messages that unite the conservative base as well as appeal to moderate voters, demonstrating inclusive leadership for regional integration.
As the Eoseong County Governor election serves as a barometer for local restructuring, generational change, and the establishment of a future industrial base, attention is focused on Choi’s strategy for the general election.
