The People Power Party has announced its candidates for the 9th Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections, including the sole recommendation of former Nomination Management Committee Chairman Lee Junghyun as the candidate for Mayor of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City.
The Central Party Nomination Management Committee of the People Power Party (the Nomination Committee) resolved on the 22nd to recommend Lee Junghyun as the sole candidate for Mayor of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City.
A representative from the People Power Party stated, "Candidate Lee is considered the most suitable person for the role, possessing extensive experience in state affairs and broad political acumen. He is seen as having the leadership and capability to successfully lead the changes and progress of the newly launched Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City."
Deokhum Park, Chairman of the Nomination Committee, said, "Antaewook, head of the Gwangju City Party Committee and a key talent with a strong local base in our party, has withdrawn his nomination application," adding, "A by-election is scheduled to be held in Gwangsan, Gwangju. We hope that everyone will continue to unite unwaveringly for the new leap and victory of the party."
The party also resolved to recommend Yang Jungmoo as the sole candidate for Governor of North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province. The People Power Party explained, "We determined that candidate Yang is the optimal person to successfully revitalize the economy and restore livelihoods in North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province, as well as to lead its future development."
For the head of Seoul Gwanak District, Lee Namhyung was recommended as the sole candidate. The party stated, "Having engaged with residents on the ground for a long period, Lee is regarded as a representative local leader with deep community ties and is considered to have the ability to resolve Gwanak District’s key challenges swiftly."
The People Power Party also decided to recommend Cha Hwayeol as the sole candidate for Mayor of Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. The party evaluated Cha as "the right person for the role, equipped with extensive field experience and strong execution skills, and possessing the vision and capability to elevate Pyeongtaek into Korea’s leading global advanced economic city."
Regarding the June 3 National Assembly by-elections, the People Power Party resolved to recommend Kim Minkyeong as the sole candidate for Asan-si-eul, South Chungcheong Province. Kim Seokhun was finalized as the sole candidate for Ansan-si-gap, Gyeonggi Province. In addition, Oh Jiseong was recommended as the sole candidate for Gunsan-si, Gimje-si, and Buan-gun-gap, North Jeolla Province.
On the nomination for Pyeongtaek-eul, the People Power Party responded, "Further discussion is needed," adding, "We plan to reach a decision within a day or two."
