Supreme Council Member Kwang-Han Cho, who had planned to run in the People Power Party primary for Gyeonggi Province governor in the June 3 local elections, announced on April 21 that he would not be running. Instead, he stated that he would support another preliminary candidate for Gyeonggi governor, former MBC announcer Lee Seong-bae.
On the afternoon of April 21, Supreme Council Member Cho held a press conference at the National Assembly's Communication Center and said, "Today, I intend to withdraw my candidacy for the People Power Party Gyeonggi governor primary," adding, "For the sole purpose of the party’s victory, I will return to where I belong."
Supreme Council Member Cho said, "Over the past two months, I have done everything I could to find a winning card," and "I contacted and encouraged many talented people, but the reality was not easy." He continued, "Honestly, I was discouraged by the fact that I could not achieve tangible results." According to him, it was at this time that candidate Lee emerged.
Supreme Council Member Cho said, "I appreciated candidate Lee’s decision to put aside his personal studies and stability and boldly step forward in the face of the party’s crisis." He also explained, "I will take on the role of chief of the election campaign headquarters for candidate Lee and will do everything possible to earn the support of party members and Gyeonggi residents in the future."
Candidate Lee attended the press conference and officially declared his candidacy, saying, "I will become a governor who communicates the voices of residents through Gyeonggi Province’s policies." Candidate Lee presented a concrete vision to grow Gyeonggi Province in five key areas: jobs, housing, education, transportation, and culture.
