On April 21, Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province announced that it is simultaneously carrying out road expansion and the installation of landscape lighting along the Deulseong-ro section connecting Wonho-ri and Munseong-ri in Goa-eup, aiming for a comprehensive improvement of the city’s transportation system and living environment.
This project targets both the elimination of chronic traffic congestion and the enhancement of nighttime safety. The city is working toward completing the entire section within this year.
Over the past 10 years, the development of Munseong Districts 2 and 3 and the Wonho District has added approximately 5,000 households to the area, causing a sharp increase in traffic on Deulseong-ro. The four-lane road could no longer handle the volume of vehicles during rush hours, leading to recurring congestion. The narrow width of the road made U-turns difficult, resulting in ongoing inconvenience for drivers.
The city has allocated a total project budget of KRW 18.3 billion to expand a 2.56-kilometer section of road connecting Wonho-ri, Munseong-ri, and Songnim-ri. The city secured additional lanes by adjusting some sidewalks and installing decked walkways along the slopes of the Inno Stream where space was limited. New U-turn spaces have also been created in each section to further improve traffic flow. Upon completion, significant alleviation of rush hour congestion is expected.
Alongside the road expansion, nighttime environment improvements are also underway. The city is investing KRW 800 million to install landscape lighting on the Inno Stream crossing bridge and the railings of the Deulseong-ro deck walkway. Both the Munseong Reservoir and the Inno Stream trail are popular community spaces with high nighttime usage.
This project will connect the Munseong Reservoir, Inno Stream trail, and the Deulseong-ro pedestrian path into one seamless route for pedestrians. In addition to making walking more convenient, the installation of lighting is expected to improve visibility and help prevent crime. Enhancements to nighttime scenery are also anticipated to have a positive effect on the area’s image.
Jung Sunghyun, acting mayor of Gumi, stated, “Deulseong-ro is a key arterial road that connects residential areas with the Gumi National Industrial Complex No. 5. Although there may be some inconveniences during the construction period, we ask for citizens’ understanding. We are committed to delivering tangible improvements as soon as possible through the swift completion of the project.”
