Actors Cha In-pyo and Yeon Jung-hoon will make their stage debut in the play "Dead Poets Society."
On April 21, production company Mast International announced that the play "Dead Poets Society," based on the classic film of the same name which won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1990, will have its Korean premiere from July 18 to September 13 at the NOL Theater Daehangno Woori Card Hall. Cha In-pyo and Yeon Jung-hoon, along with Oh Man-seok, will appear on stage in the lead role of John Charles Keating.
The original film "Dead Poets Society" was released in 1989 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay the following year. Tom Schulman, who wrote the screenplay for the film, also wrote the script for the play. The work offers a special experience by posing profound questions about the true value of education and one's attitude toward life-giving young people the courage to pursue their dreams and inspiring adults to rediscover forgotten passions.
The play begins in 1959 at Welton Academy, a prestigious and highly traditional American boarding school, when English teacher John Keating arrives as the new faculty member. Keating opens up a new world to students who have only been pressured to focus on entrance exams and success, delivering the message "Carpe Diem (Seize the Day)" and encouraging them to enjoy the present. Students like Neil Perry, who dreams of becoming an actor despite his father's control, and Todd Anderson, a reserved boy who discovers his inner strength, each embark on their own journey to find their voice.
The role of honor student Neil Perry will be played by Kim Rak-hyun, Lee Jae-hwan, and Kang Chan-hee. Todd Anderson, a timid and introverted boy who discovers his inner giant after living in the shadow of his older brother, will be portrayed by Kim Tae-kyun and Moon Sung-hyun. Knox Overstreet, a model student who always followed the rules but finds the courage to pursue love, will be played by Im Ji-seop and Kim Joo-min. The role of Charlie Dalton, the most spontaneous and energetic character full of confidence and adventurous spirit, will be played by Kang Jun-gyu and Lee Tak-soo. Richard Cameron, a strict realist who prioritizes rules and safety above all else, will be played by Kim Jae-min and Siwoo. The genius student Stephen Meeks, full of intellectual curiosity, will be portrayed by Ha Sung-hoon and Jeon Yu-ho.
The play will be directed by Jo Kwang-hwa, who previously directed "Seopyeonje," "Werther," and "Man Impulse," among others.
Tickets for the play "Dead Poets Society" will be available for reservation starting at 2:00 p.m. on April 21 through NOL Ticket and YES24 Ticket.
