Hwang Inho, a preliminary candidate for mayor of Dong-gu, Daejeon, has announced his vision to build a "Bread Tower" in the Daejeon Station area, where people can taste bread from all over the country in one place.

In an interview with The Asia Business Daily on April 20, Hwang said, "If we construct a 20-story 'Bread Tower' and have 50 national bread brand stores on each floor, about 1,000 bakeries will be accommodated. This way, Daejeon will become a hub for bakeries nationwide, allowing people to taste not only the bread from Sungsimdang but also from all over Korea."

He added, "If three young people are assigned to each corner, about 3,000 jobs will be created, and with this infrastructure in place, we are planning to hold a bread festival every quarter."

Hwang also laid out strategies to promote the "new nighttime economy city" centered around the Daejeon Station area, stating, "Major cities around the world are strategically introducing the 'new nighttime economy' as a policy to invigorate urban economies."

He explained, "While the new nighttime economy started in Europe and has spread to the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Southeast Asia-especially Thailand and the Philippines-South Korea remains dark at night."

He continued, "The economy does not only operate during the day-it runs at night as well. We need to create a structure that combines nighttime performances, tourism, shopping, and sports to increase the length of stay and encourage consumption. For a thriving nighttime economy, a well-established transportation infrastructure is essential to bring in large floating populations, and the Daejeon Station area is the optimal location for this."

He further stated, "In particular, I will expand content that can be enjoyed at night so that consumption extends to the Jungang Market and the original downtown commercial districts. I will make the Daejeon Station area a national model."

He emphasized, "Promoting the new nighttime economy is not simply about nighttime entertainment; it is a strategy to expand various economic activities such as leisure, culture, and shopping into the late hours, thereby increasing stay-type tourism and commercial consumption in the region."

Finally, Hwang stressed, "Administrative issues are the reason why projects that have already been initiated have been delayed for years. I will accelerate the completion of key projects to deliver tangible changes that citizens can feel."

Meanwhile, Hwang Inho is a native of Dong-gu and has completed his education at Samsung Elementary School, Hyeonam Elementary School, Woosong Middle School, Bomun High School, received a bachelor's degree from Chungnam National University, a master's degree from Yonsei University Graduate School, completed a doctoral program at the Academy of Korean Studies, and earned a Ph.D. in Tourism, Festival, and Cultural Heritage Management from Paichai University.
