The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency announced on April 21 that they will be recruiting 118 trainees for their webtoon creator training program until early next month.

The webtoon creator training program operates under two tracks: the "region-based" track and the "elite-focused" track. The region-based track aims to discover local webtoon talent and strengthen creative skills, while the elite-focused track is focused on developing original webtoon intellectual property (IP) through a creation-centered approach. From 2024 until last year, the program produced 182 graduates, many of whom now serialize their works on major webtoon platforms such as Naver Webtoon and Kakao Page.

Last month, the Korea Creative Content Agency selected nine specialized platform institutions with experience in webtoon education and creator training (three for the elite-focused track and six for the region-based track).

The selected trainees will participate in the program for approximately six months. They will receive one-on-one personalized mentoring from industry professionals, covering the entire creative process from project planning and story composition to artwork. A representative from the Korea Creative Content Agency explained, "During the training period, participants are required to complete at least three webtoon episodes and a summary of the overall synopsis."

The agency will provide creative support grants to help trainees focus on their work, and will also support them with consultations with major platforms and production companies, submission of works, and participation in contests. Business consultation sessions and related programs will be organized for the trainees’ works, expanding opportunities for serialization contracts and secondary commercialization.

Yu Hyunseok, acting president of the agency, stated, "Webtoons are a key driver in the expansion of K-content IP. We will expand the discovery of original IP and strengthen the foundation for industry growth by nurturing talent with creative capabilities."
