Samsung Electronics' smart home platform, SmartThings, is building even stronger connectivity with 25 new smart home products from the global furniture brand IKEA.
According to Samsung Electronics on April 21, IKEA’s 25 new products launched earlier this month-including the scroll wheel remote control, smart bulbs, plugs, and sensors for temperature and humidity, air quality, motion, door, and leak detection-now support the Thread-based 'Matter' standard. Previously, IKEA devices had to be connected first to IKEA’s dedicated smart product hub and then again to the SmartThings hub. Now, they can be directly linked to the SmartThings hub. Furthermore, not only can they be freely connected to Samsung’s appliances such as TVs, air conditioners, and washing machines, but also to a wide range of devices from various brands and with diverse communication protocols already registered with SmartThings.
Enhanced care features are also provided, ranging from checking in on family members to managing sleep environments. By attaching IKEA’s door sensor to a frequently used door and connecting it to SmartThings, users can monitor family activity based on door open/close data. When integrated with SmartThings’ 'Family Care' service, it becomes possible to check when the day started and whether family members are active at home, helping users to stay updated on loved ones’ well-being even when not living together.
IKEA's newly launched scroll wheel remote control earlier this month, along with 25 new products including smart bulbs, plugs, humidity-temperature, air quality, motion, door, and water leakage sensors, support the Thread-based 'Matter' standard. Samsung Electronics.

Personalized guidance, such as "Lower the temperature to 19-21 degrees Celsius for better sleep," is also provided to help create an optimal bedroom environment. Other features include setting the air conditioner to automatically activate dehumidification mode when the air quality sensor detects rising humidity, or configuring instant alerts when the leak detection sensor senses moisture.
The two companies strengthened connection stability through multiple stages of pre-release verification and implemented a dedicated user experience (UX) to ensure seamless compatibility within the SmartThings app. Among the products offering significantly enhanced user experience is the scroll wheel remote control, which, when connected to lighting, allows precise adjustment of brightness and color temperature by turning the wheel, and can also be used for devices requiring fine control, such as blinds.
Samsung Electronics is proactively adopting Thread technology to expand its smart home ecosystem. By rapidly applying new standards and growing the Matter ecosystem, the company is also strengthening its technological competitiveness in the smart home market. Furthermore, with the introduction of Thread version 1.4, a low-power local network technology essential for building smart homes, Samsung is improving inter-brand device interoperability and focusing on integrating device networks.
Jae-Yeon Jung, Vice President of the SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics’ Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platform Center, said, "Connecting IKEA devices to SmartThings allows even customers who are new to smart homes to enjoy the convenience of familiar and easy connections while reducing economic burden. We will continue to expand our ecosystem so that users can enjoy a more convenient smart home experience within SmartThings, regardless of brand or communication protocol, by collaborating with a variety of partners."
