The police have launched an investigation after a woman in her twenties, who was about to be questioned on charges of threatening her ex-boyfriend with a weapon after he asked to break up, died following symptoms of respiratory distress.
According to the Gwangju Dongbu Police Station on April 20, at around 5:30 p.m. on April 18, a 28-year-old woman, referred to as A, collapsed after experiencing respiratory distress in the suspect waiting room at the Dongbu Police Station, just before her police interrogation. Although she was transported to a nearby university hospital by the fire department, she died.
Earlier the same day, at around 5:00 p.m., A had been arrested on charges of special intimidation for threatening her ex-boyfriend with a weapon in the underground parking lot of an apartment complex in Gyerim-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, after he had asked to end their relationship. She was awaiting police questioning at the time of the incident.
A, who reportedly had a pre-existing medical condition, took medication from her own bag while waiting in the suspect holding room.
The police have requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service and are investigating the exact cause of death.
