Kim Byungwook, the Democratic Party candidate for Mayor of Seongnam, announced on April 20 his pledge to completely demolish the aging Moran Overpass and Dandae Overpass in Seongnam.
Kim stated, "The two overpasses, built solely for vehicle traffic, have become barriers that mar the city's appearance and generate noise and dust," adding, "I will have them completely demolished and fully convert the area into at-grade roads centered on ground-level traffic."
Regarding concerns about potential traffic congestion following the overpass removal, Kim presented clear alternatives. He plans to secure bi-directional traffic lanes in the space where the overpass pillars are removed, introduce dedicated left-turn lanes, and implement a smart traffic signal system to ensure smooth vehicle flow is not hindered.
He also prepared measures to minimize inconvenience for residents during construction. Major construction work will be concentrated at night to prevent delays during commuting hours, and low-noise, low-dust construction methods will be applied to reduce the impact on nearby merchants and residents.
Kim further cited the successful urban regeneration cases following the demolition of Cheonggye and Ahyeon overpasses in Seoul, stating, "When previously disconnected pedestrian paths are reconnected and shops that were hidden by the overpasses are restored, Seongnam's circular economy will be revitalized and the traditional city center's commercial district will flourish."
Kim appealed for public support by promising, "A clear view and a vibrant economy! I will create an unobstructed Sanseong-daero and an open future for Seongnam."
