The Democratic Party of Korea’s Gyeongbuk Provincial Committee is accelerating the final stages of its candidate nomination process for the upcoming local elections. With the additional confirmation of single-candidate recommendations for three metropolitan council districts and four local council districts, the candidate landscape in North Gyeongsang Province has become even clearer ahead of official registration. In some regions, the party is opting to maintain primary contests to test candidate competitiveness and adjust its election strategy accordingly.

7 locations including Gumi and Gyeongsan recommended for single candidacy, with 2 locations, Sangju and Yeongju, holding public participation primaries. On April 19, the Candidate Recommendation Management Committee for Public Election Candidates of the Democratic Party of Korea’s Gyeongbuk Provincial Committee, chaired by Oil Young, held its 14th meeting. During this meeting, the committee decided on single-candidate recommendations for the following districts: metropolitan council Gumi Districts 4 and 7, Gyeongsan District 1, and local council Gyeongju District A, Andong District Sa, Gimcheon District Sa, and Yeongju District Ra.

The single-candidate nominees for the metropolitan council are: Chae Hanseong for Gumi District 4, Moon Changgyun for Gumi District 7, and Jeon Bonggeun for Gyeongsan District 1. For local councils, Choi Gyuhak for Gyeongju District A, Kim Jeongrim for Andong District Sa, Lim Donggyu for Gimcheon District Sa, and Jang Younghee for Yeongju District Ra each received single-candidate recommendations.

In contrast, Sangju District Da and Yeongju District Na, where additional applications were received, have been designated as primary contest regions. In Sangju District Da, candidates Jeong Gilsu and Jeong Yongun will compete for the final nomination through a national participatory primary, while in Yeongju District Na, candidates Kim Gihun and Choi Rakseon will also vie for the nomination via a participatory primary.

As of April 19, with six days left until official candidate registration on April 25, the Democratic Party of Korea’s Gyeongbuk Provincial Committee has completed the recommendation of 11 metropolitan council candidates and 65 local council candidates in the regional constituencies.

The metropolitan council candidate list includes: Park Sungpil for Pohang District 8, Kim Sangheon for Pohang District 9, Kim Deukhwan for Gumi District 6, Lee Jiyun for Gumi District 8, Cho Jungyeol for Yeongju District 1, Park Sunghyun for Gimcheon District 3, Lim Minhyeok for Yeongdeok District, and Jeong Gwangju for Yecheon District 2, among others.

Local council candidates are also being confirmed one after another through primaries. For example, Seong Donghyeon in Sangju District Ba, Kim Sangseon in Yeongyang District Ga, and Hwang Gwansik in Gyeongsan District Da have secured their nominations by winning their respective primaries. As a result, the Democratic Party of Korea’s Gyeongbuk Provincial Committee has effectively established a lineup of 65 local council candidates, accelerating its preparations for the election.

The process for selecting proportional representation (PR) candidates is also in full swing. On this day, the Gyeongbuk Provincial Committee’s PR Candidate Recommendation Management Committee decided to conduct a two-day ARS ranking vote among party members on April 22 and 23 for metropolitan council male candidates and local council female candidates from Gumi and Gyeongju.

Additionally, the committee decided to hold ranking votes for metropolitan council female candidates and local council female candidates from Andong, while nominating Kim Myeongjeong as the sole top-ranked PR candidate for Yeongju.

Political observers note that the Democratic Party of Korea’s Gyeongbuk Provincial Committee is employing a dual strategy: stabilizing its election lineup early through single-candidate nominations, while simultaneously boosting competitiveness and organizational cohesion in key battleground districts through primaries. As the official candidate registration approaches, the pace of nominations is expected to further clarify the final election matchups in each constituency.

This latest round of announcements goes beyond merely confirming candidates; it is seen as a crucial inflection point in assessing whether the Democratic Party of Korea can strengthen its organizational base and successfully expand its presence in North Gyeongsang Province. With the region traditionally favoring conservative parties, attention is focused on what candidate competitiveness and strategies the Democratic Party will deploy in the remaining nomination process and the general election campaign.
