South Korea has secured the position of chair country in the field of international standardization for displays.
The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on April 20 that Changhee Lee, Chief Technology Officer of Samsung Display, has been elected as the next chair of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Display Technical Committee (TC 110).
IEC TC 110 is a key committee that oversees international standards in next-generation display fields, such as OLED and flexible displays. Major technology-leading countries, including South Korea, China, Japan, and the United States, participate in this committee, and it is recognized as an arena of intense competition for standardization to secure global market leadership.
Last year, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, in cooperation with the Korea Display Industry Association and domestic display expert committees, nominated CTO Lee as a candidate and carried out extensive activities to gain support from member countries. CTO Lee, who has contributed to the development of display technologies such as OLED and the establishment of standardization foundations for nearly 20 years, was finally elected after a competitive process against a Chinese candidate, based on his expertise.
Until now, China had held the chairmanship of TC 110 for nine years, expanding its influence on international standardization and the market. Although South Korea has been taking the lead in practical work by overseeing 7 out of 9 standard development working groups, this is the first time the country will assume the overall chair position.
Starting in October, CTO Lee will serve as chair of TC 110 for six years, leading the direction of international standards for next-generation display technologies and facilitating consensus among member countries. As a result, it is expected that the likelihood of South Korean technologies being adopted as international standards will increase significantly.
Kim Daeja, Administrator of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, said, "Assuming the chairmanship this time will serve as a turning point for South Korea to establish itself as a global leader in display standardization competitions," adding, "The agency will actively support the performance of the chair role and continuously back our companies’ international standardization activities."
