President Lee Requests National Assembly to Initiate 'Special Inspector' Appointment Procedure

Blue House: "The Special Inspector General Plays a Role in Enhancing Public Trust"

On April 19, the Blue House announced, "President Lee Jae-myung has once again requested that the National Assembly initiate the appointment procedure for the special inspector in order to establish discipline among public officials and enhance the transparency of state affairs."

Kang Hoon-sik, Chief of Staff to the President, conveyed this during a briefing at the Chunchugwan press room that afternoon. Chief Kang stated, "The special inspector system was introduced to prevent power-related corruption among the president's relatives and associates," adding, "Its very existence can enhance public trust in the president and the government."

Chief Kang went on to explain, "President Lee believes that, according to the principles of democracy and popular sovereignty, all power must be subject to institutional oversight, and therefore the appointment of a special inspector is necessary." He further noted, "Under the Special Inspector Act, a written recommendation from the National Assembly is required as the initial step in appointing a special inspector." He requested, "Given the president's firm commitment, we hope the National Assembly will promptly begin the relevant procedures."

Meanwhile, President Lee had already expressed his intention to appoint a special inspector at a press conference marking his 30th day in office in July of last year, stating, "It is beneficial for power to be kept in check, even for the safety of those who hold it." Chief Kang also commented at a press briefing on the administration's six-month achievements in December of the same year, "We hope the National Assembly will quickly recommend and send the candidate for the special inspector."
