Cultural Heritage Administration Conducts Intensive Safety Inspections at 158 Sites Including Sungnyemun

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on April 20 that it will conduct an “Intensive Safety Inspection of National Heritage Sites” at 158 locations nationwide, including Sungnyemun in Seoul, Namhansanseong, and the Bangaeri Ginkgo Tree in Wonju, through June 19.

According to guidelines from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, this inspection will be a joint effort between the Cultural Heritage Administration, local governments, public corporations, public agencies, and private experts. It will be carried out in connection with a special safety inspection to prepare for flood and typhoon season.

This year, in addition to nationally designated and registered heritage sites, the inspection scope will also include museums, exhibition halls, and office facilities under the Cultural Heritage Administration’s jurisdiction, as well as restoration and excavation sites. In cooperation with the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, scientific inspections will be conducted using non-destructive precision measurement equipment such as 3D scanners.

The key inspection items include the safety conditions of national heritage sites and surrounding facilities in preparation for summer flood and typhoon season, the operational status of firefighting equipment (such as fire extinguishers and hydrants) and security systems (such as CCTV), electrical and gas facilities, and the presence of disaster response manuals at each site.
